London Review : The Allegory

Drake and Morgan own some of my favourite bars and restaurants in London. So the news of the launch of their newest baby The Allegory was met with squeals of delight. Within a week of their opening, Kris and I were there to check the place out.

Located within the shiny development of Principal Place (between Shoreditch and Liverpool Street), The Allegory is one of the first residents of this brand new complex.

The interiors are designed by Fusion Design and Architecture and is every bit dazzling and Insta-worthy. The bright and cavernous industrial interiors are softened by plush leather banquettes and patterned upholstery in bright and monochrome colours. Wood and marble scream texture whilst layered lighting scales down the lofty ceilings, creating atmosphere and intimacy. First impressions of this place in terms of interiors are really positive!

Kris and I arrive on a late Sunday afternoon, hungover from a previous night’s celebration. So of course, the prudent thing to do is order some more cocktails to heal our heads. He opts for the innovative Breakfast Martini (£7.95) whilst I go for the classic Porn Star Martini (£9.95). Mine comes with a smooth and frothy Vanilla finish that gently eases into your mouth. Kris’s drink is a sharp and vibrant Campari with citrus notes from the marmalade. Both cocktails are ace!

We decide to share some small plates and then go large on the mains. First up is the Scotch Egg (£6.25) with Chorizo and Smoked Paprika Mayonnaise. They are every bit the sunny perfection one hopes for in a scotch egg –  oozing with that vividly orange yolk encased inside a spicy, meaty exterior. We order one initially and then change our minds and order another one as they are too good to share.  The sauce is a revelation.

My heart sinks when I am told that the Salt Szechuan Pepper Squid are sold out. So I settle for the Chicken Satay (£6.50) which is rather boring, save for the delicious sesame and peanut sauce it comes slathered with.

For the main act, Kris orders the Bangers and Mash (£10.50), the ultimate hangover bashing food. It delivers with a hefty high-five; nicely cooked flavoursome sausages, buttery mash flecked with herbs and lashings of glistening gravy.

I order the Sunday Roast Chicken (£14.95) with all the trimmings. The portions are humongous and everything tastes good. However, the presentation could have been better and I feel slightly short-changed with my dinky bowl of gravy. Thankfully, peace is restored when I am offered a more substantial quantity.

We also share some Roman Fries (£4.50) which are nice and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside.

The day isn’t without its groans. The chips are under-seasoned. Some of the food arrives cold. The staff are distracted and we have to prompt them a couple of times.

However, all is forgiven with a genuine apology from the manager. I also remind myself that The Allegory has been operational for barely a week. Backed by an established brand like Drake and Morgan makes me confident that these issues will be ironed out in no time.

East London has yet again acquired a swanky new destination which will no doubt draw in the moneyed City workers and the sedate weekend brunchers.
