London Food Review : Sunday Roast, Hawksmoor

I think I have found it! The best Sunday Roast in London. In a city inundated with gastropubs, it is a steak restaurant that takes the cake (or meat, should I say) for me in terms of putting together an exceptional Sunday Roast.

We have been to Hawksmoor before, but this was our first time at the Borough Market branch. Inside it was spacious, stylishly lit and buzzy. Most of the time, it is the steak that is the winner on the table. But on a Sunday, we spotted the staff cautiously carrying trays of billowing Yorkshire puddings and jugs of gravy. There is absolutely no doubt that on a Sunday, the roast is a popular choice.

We placed our orders pretty much straightaway – Slow Roast Rump (Native breed beef, slow roasted and served with all the trimmings).

When it arrived, it is everything we expected and more. Fat slab of full-flavoured roast beef (beautifully pink and oozing a bit of meat juice), butch hunks of carrots, verdant greens and a beast of a Yorkshire pudding; engorged with scrumptious and crunchy-edged roast potatoes. There was half a roasted garlic, the flesh of which we deftly scooped out and smothered all over the beef. My greed for gravy was fulfilled by double portions which I happily slathered all over my meat and trimmings. Hawksmoor, you know me well!

We naughtied up the spread with some top notch Grilled Bone Marrow ….which is a must have if you are visiting Hawksmoor.

…and gooey triumph that this their Macaroni Cheese.

Dessert was an indulgent and syrupy sticky toffee pudding that we reluctantly split between us as we were way too full!

Copious amounts of delicious red wine literally kept our spirits high throughout the afternoon!

Service was genial and super efficient, although I didn’t quite understand why some of them were wearing beach shirts as uniform!

The Sunday Roast offering in Hawskmoor is truly glorious. It is traditionalist at heart but served with a contemporary twist. At £20 a plate and that quality meat, it is absolutely stunning value. I HIGHLY recommend this place for an awesome Sunday lunch destination, whether it is with family or a small group of friends.
