New Opening : Flock, Tower Hill

Flock is a concept eatery that serves delicious Square Mile coffee during the day, but in the evening transforms into an intimate cafe-bistro, serving classic cocktails and artisan burgers.

This under-the-arch space is lilliputian but somehow feels spacious – perhaps because they haven’t crammed it with lots of tables and chairs. The striking, black-and-white, hand-painted mural by Sophie Mo lends an artistic background to the minimalistic interiors designed by I-AM.

The flashy, bright neon ‘Flock’ sign draws your eyes up to the arched ceilings, exposed ductwork, pendant lights and overflowing greenery. This is a perfect spot for winter – pleasantly dark and cosy. I only wish they would remove the television which doesn’t really fit with the scheme.

The menu is fairly burger-centric, although dishes like Patty Melt and Swordfish Steak stand out. They serve craft beers but also beers, wines and Prosecco on tap (the more pocket-friendly options).

We ordered the Fried Calamari (ÂŁ7) to start with. It was lovely – light and airy batter, herb-flecked with soft, pliable squid inside and smooth, garlicky dip.

Kris ordered the Flock Signature Burger (ÂŁ10.50) – a 9-oz premium dry-aged beef burger, served with gherkins, lettuce, red onion, tomato, brioche and a side of fries. My initial choice of the Shrimp burger was sold out so I had to opt for the Chicken Burger with Avocado (ÂŁ8.50) and sweet potato fries.

Chicken Burger

A good burger has the perfect balance of juicy, melt-in-the-mouth meat patty, soft & slightly charred bun and the crunch of the fresh, raw vegetables, all slathered in warm sauce. In terms of the above criteria, both of the burgers ticked all those boxes.

The staff were jolly and affable; the atmosphere relaxed and informal.

Espresso Martini

Flock’s offering is honest and unassuming. The food focuses on simple dishes, quality ingredients and precision cooking without trying to be overly ambitious. Prices are reasonable considering the City location.

Flock is a good post-work hangout place for some lovely cocktails (try their signature Espresso Martini) and burgers with mates. But as a foodie destination, there is precious little else. In a city inundated with burger joints, Flock will have to push the boat out in order to stand out from the competition. I want to see more items similar to Shrimp Burgers and Swordfish Steaks on the menu… just something different that will make the crowds flock to this place!
